Revealing the Real – A 5-week Introduction to Documentary Film

Film -

How can we begin to connect the various histories of documentary film? What is the link between Nanook of the North in 1922 for example and a film like the Oscar winning Man on Wire from 2008? How can we link the world The Lumieres first put up on screen in 1895 when they pointed their camera at workers leaving a factory and the world of reality television we now inhabit? Film scholar Daniel Fitzpatrick will take us on a non-stop guided tour through the documentary film from its earliest forms to its ever-expanding modern manifestations.

At the heart of this course are three important feature screenings, each of which will include a detailed introduction and a Q&A. There will also be two illustrated lectures which will incorporate a number of other shorter pieces and excerpts from the world of documentary film. This course will be a dynamic and enlightening run through many of the key moments within the history of the documentary film, from the experimental film essays of Dziga Vertov to the agit-prop films of Michael Moore. It is of course perfect for budding documentary filmmakers as well as cinema-lovers generally, of all ages, backgrounds and knowledge.
